Odette Nibigira, Isale

I feel that, if me and the members of the cooperative do a lot to support the vulnerable people, the whole community is happy with it and profits from it.
Watch or read Odettes story below:

Development through cooperation

Although short in size Odette, a 29 year old diligent woman from Burundi, already gave shape to some great initiatives in her commune Isale. She already started a sort of cooperative with her friends where fruits and vegetables are cultivated. The motive behind this initiative grew out of her own experiences in Odette’s environment:
I grew up in an environment where there was a lot of poverty. Here it is very rare that children manage to complete their studies due to a lack of financial support.
And even if you graduate you don’t really have a big future ahead, says Odette: “They even have a hard time to find a job.” She realized that something had to change and started the cooperative.

Supporting the vulnerables…

With the next story Odette tries to explain the value of the cooperative:
There was a widow who wanted to end the studies of her kid due to a lack of financial resources. When she approached me to explain her problem I told her that the cooperative could pay the studies of her child so that he could end his primary school studies.
The cooperative of Odette and her friends are already financially supporting them for three years. Since then, the poor widow didn't stop to thank and praise Odette and het initiative. This makes her very proud: “when I think about it my heart overflows with joy. It is definitely one of my biggest accomplishments.”

…and the whole community

Odette talks about accomplishments cause the mother and the child were not the only people she and her cooperative helped. Also more and more people want to join her cooperative.
I feel that, if me and the members of the cooperative do a lot to support the vulnerable people, the whole community is happy with it and profits from it.
